New Delhi. Prominent environmental and social activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike late at night at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. He made the decision after detailed talks with Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh, along with leaders of the Apex Body of Leh-Ladakh and his wife, Gitanjali Angmo. Wangchuk broke his fast by taking a sip of soup, saying he decided to end it after receiving written assurances to ensure student safety and prevent the movement from turning violent.

The central leadership also provided a signed written commitment promising a full parliamentary debate on reforms to the national testing system to improve transparency. The document further stated that no police complaints or legal cases would be filed against youths who took part in peaceful protests. In addition, the government agreed to review financial support for the families of students who died by suicide following recent exam-related irregularities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced that the government will bring stricter laws against examination fraud. Alongside this, Delhi’s judicial authorities have set up dedicated fast-track tribunals to ensure paper leak cases are handled quickly.
