Mumbai. Severe monsoon rains exceeding 200 mm have brought Mumbai and nearby districts to a standstill, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Red Alert. The heavy rainfall has triggered multiple landslides in the crucial Bhor Ghat section, completely disrupting Mumbai-Pune train services and leading to the closure of major expressways.
Air travel has also been heavily affected, with low visibility causing major flight delays at Mumbai Airport. As transport disruptions and localized flooding worsened, authorities shut all schools and colleges across Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Palghar. The University of Mumbai has also postponed all scheduled examinations.
In a tragic incident, a building collapse in Mankhurd claimed six lives, following which NDRF teams were deployed to vulnerable areas. With heavy rain, thunderstorms, and high humidity expected to continue through the night, authorities have urged residents to avoid travel and work from home.
