Gayaji. An e-rickshaw driver in Bihar’s Gaya district was left astonished after his bank account allegedly displayed an available balance of Rs. 759.69 crore, in what appears to be a rare banking anomaly. The incident has prompted the bank to initiate an investigation to determine whether the balance resulted from a technical glitch or another underlying issue.
The account holder, Shiv Kumar Patel, a resident of Bageshwari under the Delha police station limits, earns his livelihood by operating an e-rickshaw and is also a beneficiary of the government’s Social Security Pension Scheme.
According to Patel, he visited a Customer Service Point (CSP) of the Central Bank of India on Saturday to withdraw Rs. 1,000 from his pension account. Shortly after the transaction, he received an automated SMS from the bank stating that his account’s available balance stood at Rs. 7.59 billion.
The message reportedly left both Patel and the CSP operator incredulous. As word of the extraordinary balance spread through the locality, residents gathered at the centre, with many expressing disbelief and curiosity over how such a substantial amount could appear in the account of a daily wage earner.
Patel subsequently contacted the manager of the bank’s Station Road branch, who advised him to refrain from carrying out any transactions or modifying his banking credentials until the matter could be examined.
Since the incident occurred on the second Saturday of the month, followed by Sunday, the branch remained closed. Bank officials have asked Patel to visit the branch on Monday for a detailed verification of the account and its transaction.
Bank officials have not offered any immediate explanation for the anomalous balance. They indicated that a comprehensive examination of the account, including its transaction history and core banking records, would be undertaken before any conclusions are drawn.
While preliminary indications suggest the possibility of a system-generated error or technical malfunction.
The unusual episode has generated widespread public attention in Gaya.
