New Delhi. The National Medical Commission has officially increased India’s MBBS intake by adding 9,911 new seats for the 2026–27 academic session, taking the country’s total undergraduate medical capacity to a record 1,36,939 seats across 823 colleges. This major expansion includes 25 new medical colleges and is largely driven by the private sector under relaxed infrastructure rules. The private sector added 7,800 new seats, increasing its total to 73,643, while government colleges added 2,111 seats, taking their total capacity to 63,296.
This increase will have a major impact on regional counseling. Karnataka now has the highest number of MBBS seats in the country with 15,395 after adding 1,300 seats this year. Uttar Pradesh follows with 14,000 seats across 88 colleges, while Tamil Nadu ranks third with 13,999 seats. Rajasthan, Telangana, and Bihar also recorded significant increases in seats. The updated seat matrix has been sent to the Medical Counselling Committee for All India Quota mapping, though the final numbers may still change slightly due to regulatory appeals.
