New Delhi. The Delhi High Court has sentenced actor Rajpal Yadav to three months of simple imprisonment in seven connected cheque-bounce cases. Upholding his conviction under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said that Yadav had repeatedly failed to honour settlement promises in a long-running loan dispute with Murli Projects.
The court ordered that all the sentences will run concurrently, which means he will serve only three months in jail in total. It also directed Yadav to pay a fine of ₹1.05 crore in each case, while his wife, Radha Yadav, was fined ₹5.51 lakh in each case.
Criticising the repeated legal delays, the judge said, “Law is not a script that can be rewritten at the will of an actor.” However, the court has given Yadav two months of protection to appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court before he has to serve his jail sentence.
