New Delhi. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, along with ARAI, has dismissed several viral claims circulating online about India’s E20 petrol (20% ethanol-blended fuel).
The government clarified that E20 does not damage modern vehicle engines or excessively drain natural resources. Tests conducted by automotive experts confirmed that E20-compliant vehicles face no major compatibility or corrosion issues with the fuel.
Officials also rejected the viral “10,000-litre water usage” claim, explaining that modern distilleries use only around 3 to 5 litres of water to produce one litre of ethanol. Other rumours — including claims that E20 voids vehicle warranties or attracts insects — were dismissed as misinformation.
Although ethanol has slightly lower energy density, which may reduce mileage by around 3% to 6%, the government said the overall benefits of the program are significant. Since 2014, ethanol blending has helped India save over ₹1.9 lakh crore in foreign exchange, provided ₹1.6 lakh crore to Indian farmers, and reduced harmful vehicle emissions.
Officials described E20 as a safe and practical step toward reducing fuel imports and supporting India’s cleaner energy goals.
