New Delhi. At the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in New Delhi from July 1–3, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan’s first female Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi agreed on a major economic and technology partnership to deal with global supply chain and energy challenges.
One of the biggest announcements was a plan to bring nearly ¥10 trillion (around $62 billion) in Japanese investment into India over the next 10 years. To reduce dependence on unstable oil supplies from West Asia, both countries also launched the Japan-India Cooperative Biogas (CBG) Initiative and expanded cooperation on green hydrogen projects.
The summit also focused heavily on technology and defense, with both nations strengthening ties in artificial intelligence, semiconductor supply chains, and the UNICORN naval antenna project. The two leaders also virtually inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s new ₹35,000 crore manufacturing plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana.
Highlighting the close cultural and diplomatic relationship between the two countries, PM Modi warmly referred to PM Takaichi as “meri chhoti behen” (my younger sister), emphasizing the growing strength of the India-Japan partnership.
