Nabinagar(Aurangabad). NTPC Nabinagar successfully conducted a comprehensive mega mock drill simulating a Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) leak at its DM (Demineralization) plant, aimed at strengthening industrial safety, disaster management and emergency preparedness.
The exercise was held under the guidance of Project Head and Regional Executive Director (East-1) L.K. Behera. It was led and coordinated by CISF Deputy Commandant Rafakat Khan, NDRF Deputy Commandant Kaushal and CISF Unit BRBCL Deputy Commandant Vikas Kumar.
Senior officials from Human Resources, Medical, Security and other relevant departments were present on the occasion, including General Manager (O&M) Anil Kumar T.C., General Manager (Project) Rakesh Sharma and General Manager (Maintenance & ADM) Manoranjan Panigrahi.
The objective of the mock drill was to test the plant’s emergency response system, coordination among various agencies, rescue and control measures and the overall effectiveness of the disaster management mechanism during a chemical disaster. Such exercises play a crucial role in ensuring swift and coordinated action during emergencies and assessing the operational capabilities of all involved agencies.

During the exercise, a hypothetical scenario involving an HCl leak at the DM plant was created. Upon receiving the alert, the plant’s emergency action plan was immediately activated. Various NTPC disaster management teams along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), State Police, CISF Fire and Security wings, State Administration and the Mutual Aid team from BRBCL carried out coordinated and rapid actions to secure the affected area. Additionally, the entire process—comprising leak containment, the safe rescue and evacuation of affected individuals and decontamination was successfully demonstrated.
The excellent coordination, rapid decision-making capabilities and effective response demonstrated by all participating agencies showcased their collective preparedness and proficiency in handling any potential chemical disaster.
A detailed evaluation of the entire exercise was conducted during the review meeting held after the mock drill.
NTPC Nabinagar remains fully committed to industrial safety, environmental protection, and the safety of its employees and the surrounding community. Such regularly conducted mock drills play a crucial role in strengthening coordination among various agencies and ensuring an effective and swift response in the event of any chemical or industrial disaster.
