Patna. In a major step to improve access to higher education, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary inaugurated 211 new government degree colleges. The initiative is part of the state’s “Unnat Shiksha-Ujjwal Bhavishya” mission and focuses on blocks that earlier did not have a local college, greatly reducing travel difficulties for rural students and girls.
More than 60,000 students have already enrolled for the first academic session. Initially, the colleges will offer undergraduate courses in six core subjects: Hindi, English, History, Political Science, Economics, and Sociology. To begin teaching immediately, classes will be held in temporary upgraded Plus-Two school buildings until permanent campuses are constructed. The government also announced that colleges will be named after land donors to recognize their contribution.
Along with the block-level expansion, the Chief Minister approved the development of a 200-acre Central University at Vikramshila in Bhagalpur, aimed at reviving the region’s historic educational legacy. The main inauguration event took place in Goradih block of Bhagalpur, while campuses across the state joined virtually.
