Chennai. In a heartwarming moment at the 62nd Convocation of IIT Madras, a mother and her son walked across the stage together to receive their degrees, drawing widespread admiration and applause. The inspiring duo, 45-year-old Jigisha Tailor and her 21-year-old son Aditya Kapadia from Gujarat, graduated from the institute’s online Data Science and Applications programme.
Jigisha, a former electronics engineering faculty member, had taken a career break in 2019 due to family responsibilities. Encouraged by her son, she returned to academics in 2022 by enrolling in IIT Madras’ online programme. Aditya had joined the same programme in 2021 after completing school. While Aditya earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, Jigisha received a Diploma in Data Science and Applications.
The mother-son duo said studying together strengthened their bond, with each motivating the other through assignments, examinations and academic challenges. Their story has resonated widely on social media, becoming a symbol of lifelong learning and proving that education has no age limit.
